Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art and theater. DuVernay instantly was captivated with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art is a great vehicle for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma to later direct a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of a member on the jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
